Launching a New Partnership w/ Pets for Patriots
This month (November), we are proud to announce the launch of a new program here at C.A.R.E. which will connect the healing love of shelter pets to local veterans and active duty military. In partnership with the national organization Pets for Patriots, C.A.R.E. will offer special reduced $25 adoption fees for eligible dogs and cats to these valued members of our community.
To begin the process, service members in our region should first apply at PetsForPatriots.org – a quick and easy process. (To encourage local adoptions, only those living within 40 miles of our shelter will be eligible to adopt from our shelter.) Once approved, service men and women are invited to keep an eye on our adoptable pet listings at ColoradoAnimalRescue.org to find their perfect pet! Pets for Patriots eligible pet guidelines include:
- Dog or cat, at least 2 years of age OR
- Dog or cat with special needs OR
- Dog or cat in the shelter with a 6 month stay or longer OR
- Dog that is 40+ pounds at adoption
Through these eligibility criteria, Pets for Patriots seeks to match retired and active military with dogs and cats that may have been overlooked at the shelter and help reduce the impacts of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and loneliness.
Once service members spot an eligible pet they’d like to meet, they can give us a call! We will help them set up a time to come do a meet-n-greet. After adopting, Pets for Patriots participants also receive other perks like Welcome Home gift cards and post-adoption support.
Our friends Chris and Cheyenne Laque of Mountain Paw Pet Supply in Rifle, CO recently stopped by the shelter to meet a few shelter pets and help us launch our new program. Chris and Cheyenne have also supported our Pet Food Pantry in the past. Chris is active duty military, and recently returned home from seven months away in combat medic training. He says that returning home to his two dogs and cat “was amazing, they are like family.” Thank you, Laque family!
